New Testament Cannon Formation
What can we conclude about the NT?
By 100 A.D., all 27 New Testament books were
written & “received” as Scripture by the churches.
• By the leading of the Holy Spirit, the NT books
were immediately recognized by the people of
God, not centuries later by an outside council.
• Within one generation of NT completion, every
book had been cited by an early church father.
• These same 27 books were ratified by the Council
of Hippo (393 A.D.) & Council of Carthage (397 A.D.)
The NT Canon is authoritative and closed
Summary – New Testament Canon
The NT Canon was confirmed and received by the early church leaders as the books were written.
Under the leading of the Holy Spirit, decisions were made immediately by the people of God who recognised certain writings as authoritative.
These decisions were not made centuries later by an outside council.
The people of God were careful to confirm or reject books that weren’t authoritative.
